BALD EAGLE

I know it's Tiny Tuesday but this bird is hardly tiny and I wanted to share him with you.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus); American Bald Eagle.  Big birds having a wingspan of up to 7 feet...large enough to grab your small dog and fly off with it.

They are making a comeback from a threatened population back in the 60s and 70s due to DDT usage in agriculture.  DDT, an insecticide, washed into local waters, fish took it up metabolically, eagles eat fish and now it's in them.  It turns out that DDT affects egg shell strength so that when the parent birds incubate the eggs they crack and don't hatch.

Eagles were rarely seen in these parts 50 years ago but now I see them all the time.  Magnificent birds.  This one was injured and is unable to return to the wild so he now serves as a powerful ambassador for eagles around the country.  Wisconsin has a history of relationships with Bald Eagles.  One in particular, Old Abe, served as a mascot for Wisconsin troops fighting in our Civil War.  Check it out:
