Planting tree seeds.

Seems daft to keep buying trees when the seeds are free.  Common/pedunculate oak, horse chestnut and beech.  But to keep the mice off them through winter had to find large-ish pots to enable 2 years growth before transplanting.  Will it be cold enough to vernalise them?
