Plus, in the sad absence of my pale blue Cambridge log tables (in a box somewhere), a decades-late determination to learn how to use a scientific calculator. All I wanted was to know the angle of a gradient. I knew it was a tan but I couldn't do it and didn't have the maths skills to decide which google answer was right.

For the one person who hasn't stopped reading (that's my future self), the gradient was 1 in 9, and I guessed 6°, which was only 0.34° wrong. That's what comes of having aligned masses and masses of text and image boxes to layout grids in the past.
