Melksham (Saturday 12th November 2022)
It was an afternoon of contrasts as there was a small funfair just behind Waitrose, full of noise and colour (in Extras), but just a couple of minutes walk away beside the boat shed next to the river Avon all was peace and tranquility.
I had a free Waitrose cappuccini on a bench there and this swan came up very close to me, presumably in hope of a treat. A couple of times he raised his head high in the air and made a loud gurgly noise and then returned to his grazing, only hissing a warning when I stood up in case I came too close.
I had a telephoto zoom with a 1.4 converter attached, which can be problematic as the long lens barrel increases the likelihood of camera shake and leads to manual focus failures, but I tried whacking up the ISO to 1600 and using shutter speeds as fast as possible, which seemed to work and enabled several close-up shots.
