Armistice Day

On Armistice Day, it’s important to remember those who fought for their countries,  many paying the ultimate sacrifice.

My grandfather, who worked for the Burmah Oil Company (based out in Burma) was involved in Operation Denial in 1942, where they demolished the oil fields in Burma as they retreated, in the face of a Japanese invasion of the country.

Luckily, for him, he managed to get back to the UK unhurt.

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for his father (my great grandfather), who was also out in Burma, who died in the Battle for Mandalay in April 1942, and who still lies out in the Commonwealth war cemetery in Taukkyan, Burma (see extra, an old photo from the time of his grave marker, and which has been replaced by an official commonwealth gravestone).

I am so proud of my grandfather and great grandfather, even though I never had the opportunity to meet either one.

We must never forget that war has consequences.
