Bilbao was today’s port of call. It is an industrial port city in northern Spain - famed for the Guggenheim Museum.
The Guggenheim Museum opened in 1997. It contains both modern and contemporary art. When we visited a display of cars through the ages was an extremely popular attraction. Creative with slightly bizarre designs in some instances!
Untitled Painting (Red & Yellow)- by Mark Rothko, an American artist, born in present day Latvia. It hangs in the Guggenheim Museum. (Main Blip)
The Matter of Time - intriguing art work by Richard Serra. This installation is made of weathered (rusty) steel which allows the public to walk through and within each of the eight pieces. (Extra)
Interior of Guggenheim. Of course this is only a glimpse as there are many shapes and curves within the magical building. (Extra)
Las Sirgueras - The Rope Girls
Located in the Paseo de Uribitarte, and consisting of four statues, the sculpture ‘Las Sirgueras’, by artist Dora Salazar, is a recognition of the importance of women's work and the path to equality. The work pays tribute to the figure of the sirgueras (the rope girls), women who towed vessels along the estuary using only a rope and their own strength. From Blibao tourist website. (Extra)
Puppy. This puppy sits at the entrance to the Guggenheim Museum. It is a 13 metre high sculpture known simply as Puppy, and features more than 70,000 live flowers. (Extra)
Temperature. At 4pm it was still 37C as seen on this reading in a main shopping thoroughfare. The trees were very welcome providing much needed shade. (Extra)
