Our Lady of the Rocks

Once upon a time two fishermen cast their nets and drew up a wonder from the ocean. It was an icon of the Virgin and Child, that had lodged on a small reef. The community of the village of Perast took it as a sign that the Virgin wanted a church built on the site. Easier said than done! Undeterred, for a hundred years, rocks and old wrecks were tipped into the place and a church was built on top of the man-made island. It became a centre where sailors gave thanks for being spared from the sea in the form of votive offerings – silver plaques and pictures showing the peril and delivery.
