Munich

bibba has supplied this shot as a contribution to the blipper-sourced online album of photographs of locations associated with Lorna Lloyd and her Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series with Lorna's great-great niece playing her great-great aunt). Thank you bibba!

The picture is of the Odeonsplatz in Munich. To the right of the shot is a section of the Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshals' Hall). 

It is appropriate that we post this shot today because 9th November 2022 is the 99th anniversary of a confrontation here when the Nazi party attempted to storm the Bavarian Defence Ministry. The failed coup is known as the Beer Hall Putsch or Munich Putsch. There is more detail of this on Wikipedia. 

bibba tells us that this date is also the anniversary of the November pogroms (Kristallnacht). The order for the 'sponteous demonstrations' against Jews, and specifically their synagogues, was issued from Munich by Goebbels, following consultation with Hitler, on this date in 1938. Again, there is further detail of this on Wikipedia.

Lorna mentions Munich three times in her war diary. These instances are with reference to: 

(1) the assassination attempt on the life of Hitler, known as the Bürgerbräukeller bombing, in her diary entry of November 9th 1939 (another anniversary for today!); 
(2) the Munich affair (the failed act of appeasement of September 1938) in her diary entry of March 13th 1940;
(3) earlier allied bombing raids on the city in her diary entry of November 14th 1940.
