On the House

Obligingly the rain paused for my walk to the Ivy for the monthly breakfast meet up with my school friend. She had been poorly but was restored to her former vigour and to celebrate we ordered poached eggs on toast instead of our usual toast and jam.

The couples at the tables on either side who had arrived after us ordered  full English Breakfasts which came promptly. They had finished eating them while we still waited for our poached eggs. Enquiries were made on two separate occasions about the order but were told it was coming, but it didn’t. We drank our lattés, waited and waited. It became a source of amusement to the other couples who were sitting replete. Finally, after 40 minutes the waiter appeared, triumphantly bearing our tray aloft but with no apology.

We never did discover what the problem was in the kitchen but when we asked for the bill at the end we were told it was ‘on the house’! All was forgiven!
