Marian hangings at Oxburgh

Unusually, I was at Oxburgh on Sunday - the afternoon shift.
This week, after 3 years, the Marian hangings are back on display in their purpose made room after being looked after by the V&A while the roof was replaced.
These large panels were worked between 1569 and 1584 by Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick while Mary was being kept in the custody of Bess’s husband the Earl of Shrewsbury at Hardwick Hall on the orders of Queen Elizabeth 1. They depict many animals, birds and plants  based on the knowledge of these from the illustrations  in a Tudor book of natural history  (hence the rather weird depictions of some !) (see extras too)
They came to Oxburgh as bed hangings brought by Mary Browne of Cowdray Park when she married into the Bedingfeld family in 1761. Since 1950 they have been the property of the V&A but are on loan to the National Trust at Oxburgh.
