St. Ethelreda

Today we went to Ely and visited the cathedral. Blip shows St. Ethelreda A very interesting lady!  Also two works by David Wynne, labelled. And a modern sculpture of the way up to the cross: The way of life (2000) by Jonathan Clarke

Noli me Tagere is the meeting of Mary Magdalene after she has found that Jesus’ tomb is empty.  She meets Jesus and doesn’t recognise him at first, thinking he is the Gardner.  She suddenly recognises him.  The figures are so thin, leaving the essence of their beings.  

In his statue of the virgin, her hair is like a halo. She has her hands up in response to being told she is to become  Jesus’s mother.  And the artist wanted her to represent all women so the features are a mixture of races! 

So much more in this wonderful Cathedral!

There was also a great market.  The city of Ely is a great tourist place.  We found a fabulous toy shop with a haberdashery / materials, knitting etc. And I found my knitting needles! 

Back at son’s and eaten a delicious roast Chicken!
