Sundial Pillar, the Meadows

This sundial commemorates the opening of the 1886 Edinburgh International  Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art. The Grand Hall that ran all the way from the sundial to Middle Meadow Walk (at the tree line) was intended to be permanent but fell foul of the law forbidding all permanent structures on the Meadows.  That same law provides the same protection today to our fantastic outdoor public space.
