The Salt House

Salt was one a very expensive commodity in Britain, being highly prized as it enabled communities to preserve their food from one season to te next. These salt houses in Port Eynon are the ruins of an industry long-gone, but one which supported and helped to develop the local economy 300 years ago.

The sea water was pumped to vats above fires, where it evaporated and left the crystals to be shovelled away and transported.

Our wanderings took us to this interesting site, and then onto the rocky shore, where I was able to answer friends interested questions about the distribution of seaweeds and snails.

Such industry on show, above and below the waves!
