Tessa and Mary Bruce

Today's the day ........................... for a medieval meander

We stepped back in time today to discover what life was like in Dumfries in the 14th century.

Dumfries Museum was filled with a range of medieval characters including a pilgrim, a monk, King Robert the Bruce and his wife who all shared tales of their lives.  There were special displays of objects to handle, craft activities, medieval music, and storytelling to enjoy.

This is Tessa trying on a chain-mail helmet (which was actually very heavy) with the help of Mary Bruce, sister of King Robert.  Despite the fact that her life was not all that happy a one - and came to a premature end at the age of 41 - she seemed quite cheerful.  She was very willing to share her knowledge of the goings-on in medieval times and her in-depth knowledge of the Bruce Family in particular.

We all enjoyed it - and when we got back home the imaginations had been fired enough for the dressing up to continue with another dramatical production - in-house this time .....................!
