Vemork

The hydro-electric plant at Vemork outside Rjukan where the Heroes of Telemark destroyed the heavy water plant controlled by the Nazis in 1942, effectively preventing the Germans from developing an atomic bomb. When you see the landscape they survived in, and the gorge they climbed through to reach their target - in darkness, in winter, in silence, against heavy odds - you begin to get some appreciation of what the words "war hero" can really mean.
