Sandhill cranes
We had to pick up a wine club quarterly shipment at one of the Finger Lakes wineries and it was a gorgeous fall day , so we toddled on up to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge first. The last time we were there there were a fair number of ducks and geese and a lot of egrets and herons. Today there was a massive amount of ducks ( shovelers, mallards , green winged teals and some pintails) but oh my , the fun stuff that was there today. The sandhills flew right overhead and the closest they have been before when we've been there was far, far away. There were 3 - other photo in extras.
A peregrine buzzed the flocks of geese ,ducks and gulls in the main pool, scaring half of them into flight. The resident harrier was floating around , and my "I've never seen one before" moment of the day was the Hudsonian godwit in extras. Wow . I forgot the other shorebirds were greater and lesser yellowlegs , which you can see there quite frequently. Missed the dunlins though darn it.
