Something in the water?

Italy has some of the best water in Europe. The fountains were important water sources for everyday life of Rome’s local residents in the past – these days they quench the thirst of tourists and the numerous dogs living in central Rome.

At some time in the 1980s or ‘90s, Italians, like people in many other countries, took a turn backwards. They started drinking bottled water when out in restaurants, and in their homes. It has nothing to do with the taste or quality of the water (probably more to do with marketing) and has become something of a cultural habit ever since. All this bottled water creates a big problem of what to do with single-use plastics. Manufacturing plastics is part of the “Big Oil” industry – it’s made from coal, natural gas, salt or crude oil. It takes about 2000 times more energy to bring you water in the plastic bottle compared to delivering water through a tap [Source].
