The ancient yew tree

In the churchyard of St Cuthbert's in the hamlet of Beltingham stands this yew tree. It is thought to be over 1000 years old. Metal bands have been placed around the trunk to hold it upright.

Today's walk for the Intermediate group was a 7.4mile route, led by Kay. We left Bardon Mill and headed for Beltingham. Some of the group had not seen the ancient yew before. It is almost impossible to photograph it in its entirety but I like the way some of the group were enjoying it from below. Shapes of several different animals were seen in the old branches.

It was blustery on the top when we left Haresby Lonnen to walk to the Long Stone. There is an excellent view of Vindolanda from here.

We stopped in Thorngrafton for refreshments at Kay and Eric's house. I then dashed downhill to my car because Pauline was visiting us.

Pauline and I have been friends for a long time. We used to play in the Cobweb Orchestra together, back in the day. She is on retreat at Shepherd's Dene in Riding Mill.

We had a catch up before she headed back. It was all too short.
