Recent Purchases (Monday 17th October 2022)

For me, these have been very Beatlish times. Just a week or so ago I'd seen a fascinating documentary film The Beatles And India, about their time there and George's increasing interest in its music, and the lasting influence they had on the music scene there.

Now, the radio waves and streaming sites such as You Tube have been full of details of the forthcoming new remix by Giles Martin of the 1966 album Revolver and on Sunday he demonstrated to Guy Garvey how a single track from the original master of Taxman that contained bass and drums had been separated into half a dozen tracks enabling Ringo's drums to have been spread across the stereo spectrum and separated from Paul's bass guitar.

The technique had been developed for Peter Jackson's restoration of archival film material, including what became the Beatles’ Get Back film,  to forefront speech tracks from unwanted background noise, and Giles Martin having seen this had worked with Jackson to adapt the four-track Revolver  tapes into multiple tracks to create stereo and 5.1 sound mixes.

Coincidentally I have been watching the first two-and-a-half hour episode of Get Back on Disney+ this weekend, and this prompted me to check out the prices of the Let it Be box set, and found that it had come down in price substantially since its release in 2021, and especially if ordered with the box set of the JohnLennon/Plastic Ono Band album. I remember buying the vinyl album of this on the day it was released, and the 'sister' album by Yoko Ono released at the same time, while I was an art student in Wolverhampton. Of the two I played the Yoko One one more often. The box sets were delivered this afternoon.

It proved very difficult to photograph in its cellophane wrap because of flare and reflections, using either no flash or on-camera flash, which is all I have, so I realise this won't win any prizes!

Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band - Why (Extended Version) (recorded October 1970, Abbey Road Studios)
Yoko Ono (vocal), John Lennon (guitar), Klaus Voorman (bass gtr), Ringo Starr (drums)
The Yoko Ono album is included in extended form on a Blu-ray disc that comes with the box set. Some amazing playing on this. John Lennon never played guitar like this on any other record, emulating Yoko's vocal sounds in places, and Ringo's drumming is a masterclass.
