Red deer on the Eastern Moors
Ruth asked us to swap days with Luca this week, so he'll be with us on Friday instead of today.
I took advantage of the unexpected free time to get out for a walk on White Edge, not far outside Sheffield. It's the season to see rutting stags, and the afternoon was blustery but sunny. In fact, it was blowing a gale up on the edge.
The small herds of red deer I saw were all downwind of me, and I didn't risk getting particularly close. On the way back, I could see and hear two stags bellowing furiously at each other, though they were too far apart to go head to head. Each had a small group of does around him; maybe they've already had a skirmish, or maybe that's still to come.
