Safe landing

This glider came in to land over the top of us as we drove over to R’s today. B was driving, not me.

We went over to see R & S and so that I could check some alterations that I’m making to shirts and trousers for S.

This evening we are watching the programme about the great storm of 1987. I remember that night well. We had just moved from Lincolnshire to Essex a couple of weeks before and spent the night awake listening to the the gales battering the roof and whipping the apple tree in the back garden. Terrified that our new home would lose it’s roof.

R slept through it, the joys of teenage years. She was delighted to hear that school was closed, and I was grateful to a neighbour who took her in and looked after her whilst I headed the 20 miles to Harlow to do an OU exam. I’d never been there before, not the easiest of places to navigate, no ‘sat nav’ in those days and all those roundabouts.

How I passed that exam I do not know, I was absolutely shattered and stressed out of my mind!! It was a case of hang on in and keep going.

Our only damage was a few tiles off the roof and the tree stripped of all the apples.

I did get to know all our neighbours very quickly, as they checked out that everyone was safe.
