Megalong School
Megalong Public School was established in the 1890s when the valley was a farming community with limited access to the outside world. Although always fairly small, it was the centre of valley activities and this continued until the 1970s and 80s when the region was discovered by the city folk, property values soared and the farming families moved out. New Megalonians, mainly weekenders, have no use for a quaint little rural school and have little respect for its history.
It’s almost closed a few times due to low numbers but is hanging on quite well for now anyway.
Here’s the old classroom in the late afternoon sun.
