Neolithic site

We decided we’d get a good feel of the island if we got the Hop On Hop Off bus from the harbour. It called at a lot of places but we didn’t get off everywhere as the next pick up was 45 minutes after drop-off. Our first visit was to the Ggantija Neolithic temples (3500 years old). We then went on to see an old windmill and a church. (Most of the churches we’ve seen here were built in the mid to late 20th century often on sites of ancient churches.). It’s hard to tell what’s old and what’s new apart from the many hotels and holiday complexes.

The bus then went to Marsalforn, on the north coast (the road to Calypso cave was closed - it is said Odysseus stayed here for 7 years with this captivating creature). We cross-crossed the island to Victoria, ta’Pinu, Gharb and then Dwejra Bay where we got off and had a walk over the interesting limestone formations and admiring where the Azure Window was before it fell in the sea. By now it was 2.35 so we got the bus back via Fontana, Xlendi, Victoria and Xewkija where we were supposed to go through the square to see a rather imposing church but the bus wasn’t allowed through as a political personage had died. We got back to the harbour at 3.30 after an interesting day out, completing 10,000 steps.

We’ll wander up the hill tonight for an early meal.
