After the funeral
Long day but beautiful send off for Ray. Fergus, his son, perfectly encapsulated his character in the eulogy. We entered to the haunting ‘Farewell to Stromness’ by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Stefania read the poem ‘When I Go’ by Donna Ashworth. I’d never heard this before but it was so moving. And then there was ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra and ‘Yesterday When I Was Young’ by Charles Aznavour. Ray would have loved it and been so terribly proud.
Afterwards we went back to Ray’s golf club which had, in a nice touch, lowered its flag to half mast. We got to meet up with the young children and grandchildren which brought a light note to a sad day.
And then to lunch before Jode had to leave to head back to Holland, Laura and Ben back to work, Rachel to her family and me for an early night. First time for a long time that we’ve been all together!
