Twr Mawr Lighthouse
A visit to Llanddwyn Island or Ynys Llanddwyn was on the "bucket list" for this holiday. Since the island can be cut off around high tides, this was the safest day for the trip, despite the threat of wind and rain, and boy was it windy! Fortunately, the rain mostly held off until I got back to the car.
This lighthouse was built in 1845 to warn passing ships about Llanddwyn Island and it marks the western approach to the Menai Straits.
Extras: The island also features old cottages originally inhabited by pilots whose job was to pilot ships into the Menai Straits, they also manned the nearby lifeboat along with nearby locals from Newborough. A small herd of horses or ponies seem to be the only inhabitants of the island today. I also squeezed in a visit to the Menai Bridge viewpoint.
