Bird of pray?

caught my eye in a church, and got me wondering…why do so many lecterns for religious establishments have bronze (maybe brass, not sure) eagles glaring balefully over the congregation? Is the scrutiny effect, or something about prey and pray mebbe? 

(not being religious, I’m not worried about going to hell for that one!)
