I was in a second hand bookshop today. It had a fabulous collection of astronomy books from the 1930's onwards. I was very restrained and only bought one; a history of the Apollo programme that included lots of material that I hadn't seen before.
Anyway, to my point, the left hand image is of Jupiter from a 1964 book about the solar system. The photo is a single exposure, shot on film, using the 200 inch diameter telescope on Mount Palomar. Next to it is my image taken using a 5 inch diameter telescope but is the result of digitally stacking and processing 3,000 images.
I'm not trying to say oooh, look how clever I am, but highlighting how computing has become a game-changer for astrophotography. Also of interest is how much the Great Red Spot has shrunk in the intervening years.
