Sausage kings
Hofmanns are champion butchers in Wakefield, proudly displaying the shield for their champion sausages in one of the shop windows.
They also make fine pork pies, and sell old-fashioned sandwiches, freshly made to order, I used to eat them every day when I worked in town.
I remember colleagues buying pies and having brown sauce squirted into the vent at the top.
The firm has been around for over 100 years and have never stooped to the commercial vulgarity of the other 'chain' sandwich shops. Their counters have a gentility, a quietitude, of a bygone era, no matter how long the queue is. They don't do hot. They don't offer a coffee for an extra 20pence. Just old fashioned sandwiches in brown or white Yorkshire baps, fresh baked and filled with delicious cold meats or cheese with pickle or salad. You can top off the experience with the cake of your choice.
