Selling DVD's

In town we have a lot of people selling things - they sell mops, vegetables, fruit, phones, sweets ...........you name it, you will find it here! The quality can be a bit dubious though.

Today I was walking around town and I met a guy selling DVD's - most of which are not genuine! I declined the offer and then watched him approach another guy who was just sitting minding his own business!

Sometimes it can be a bit much always being hassled by people selling things or begging. As I came home there was a man sitting at my gate waiting for me. He took out a photograph and told me these were his dependents and he had no job. He pulled up his trouser leg and showed me a bad injury he had sustained recently which he said was why he had no job! Anyway.......all he wanted was money. Already in the morning I had someone at my door looking for money! So........ I got a bit angry with this guy and asked him did he come to me because I was a mzungu (white person) to which he replied yes because his fellow Malawians would not help him!

Now comes the dilemma - how do you know if someone is genuine or not?? I have been taken in more times that I care to admit to! To cut a long story short - I did not assist him and now I feel guilty........

The joys of working in a third world country!!
