Edinburgh's Visual Gems
One of the lovely things about Edinburgh is that because it is low-rise, you're often just a sympathetic curve away from a stellar view.
So it came to pass. Wednesday night, the Brownie pickup. I noticed as I was doing a 3 point turn that you could see all the way across to the former Donaldson's School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Designed by William Playfair, it was paid for by the estate of James Donaldson, who made his fortune in printing. It was opened in 1850, and later grew into the role of being a school specialising in educating children who were deaf or hard of hearing.
The school has moved out of the building now, and is in a purpose-built facility in Linlithgow. But this iconic building remains a feature of Edinburgh's skyline.
