Sweet Chestnut
Castanea sativa
Native to Southern Europe but widely cultivated in the temperate world.
Its seeds, chestnuts, are edible and have been used in cooking and roasting since
Ancient times.
I was surprised to learn that it lives for 500 or 600 years and sometimes for much longer.
It is only distantly related to Horse Chestnuts. The latter produces similar seeds which are called conkers. They are not palatable to humans but many of us have threaded string through them and gone into battle.
