Ex-canal

Today I had a meeting in Kendal and, being carless, I walked back to the office along the canal.

Or, rather, what was once a canal.

The last few miles of the canal that goes between Lancaster and Kendal were filled in many years ago. Indeed, the M6 runs over the top of the canal in two places. This, no doubt, is one of the many reasons that the price of reopening the canal is put at £15 million pounds.

And yet the project is talked about, to varying degrees of enthusiasm and intensity, every few years.

Here, then, is one of the many apparently pointless bridges that one day may reclaim their purpose.
