last minute practice
Two days to go. The tickets are more or less all sold. Everything’s ready to go, except us. We’re now on version 8 of the set list.
We’re running through our final number, ‘Rockin’ in the free world’. I’m sat quietly in a corner just diddling along to the music on my guitar. They all stop and look at me. “That’s quite good” they say. “Can you do that again?” I can’t as it happens.
We start again and I fiddle around, more enthusiasm than technique. If I can get this sorted by Sunday, they say, I will have a guitar solo. My first, as it happens, in over 50 years of playing guitar.
I’m not a lead player, for any number of reasons. But mostly because I do not have the pouty, wide-legged stance, nor the leather trousers.
Just to add to the pressure, I’ve done something to my back, so I may end up playing the gig sitting down. Not really a good look for a Rock-God .
