Windy!
It seems like our outdoor photo exhibitions are destined to never be taken down when planned. This time it was the strong winds around lunchtime that did the damage, ripping a long section off the fence and tearing the banner in half. One of the other photographers alerted me to what had happened, which they had seen on their way home. With the eyelets ripped out even if the banner could have been cleaned up it wouldn't have been easy to put it up again so I decided to just take it down and throw it out. Technically today was the last day for the exhibition and I had planned taking it down after the weekend. Obviously the weather had other ideas - apparently the wind gusts were up to 47mph and from the south, which means it must have been blowing straight through the fence so perhaps it isn't that surprising that the banner was ripped off the fencing.
