Day trip to Belem
Breakfast once again In our friendly Cafe next door to the apartment. Had a bit of banter about the Portuguese word for jam. I made the mistake once in Jerez asking for toasts and jam and was given a huge plate of toasted baguette and ham (jamon in Spain). I felt like weeping the portion was huge and all I wanted was toast and jam :)
We ar 15 mins from the Cascais town centre down the hill, and jumped on a train to Belem. When staying in Lisbon in February we went out to Belem to the coaches museum and this time we went to the Museu Coleção Berardo. The train is very cheap and you can use the Viva Viagem card that you pick up at the airport metro. So easy!
This museum is vast and very well laid out with contemporary art. Some of the ‘isms are weird but I enjoyed most of it. The famous Andy Warhol one of Judy garland is there and a few of his others. Spent a couple of hours here and dodged a giant shower of rain while we had lunch in the nearby Cafe as if you went there you got a free drink. Well why not !
Next we walked to Henry the Navigator big statue overlooking the Tejo, quieter than normal I would say. Next up was the Electricity Museum, what a place and preserved in It’s original form (not demolished for flats or a hotel). It’s worth a visit. Surprised to see the Babcock and Willcox works from Glasgow had machinery in there from back in the days when UK had actual manufacturing industries.
The MAAT building (built 2016) was closed but we stopped off there for a refreshment overlooking the 25 April bridge (a big favourite of mine). Watched some military ships slowly make their way down river -Norwegian, German, Canadian and British ships.
Train back to Cascais from Belem- one runs every 15 mins then a walk up hill to the apartment. It was 7pm by then and we were shattered so went back to our other friendly neighbourhood restaurant- grilled salmon, potatoes and green beans and a chicken dish cooked in a sauce with rice (shared). Again the food was fabulous.
Fell into bed bushed again. Another Good day trip .
Tomorrow we will sorta chill!
