A Not Quite Iconic View

This is part of the Linn Cove Viaduct around grandfather Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mountain is a biosphere reserve with a multitude of endangered plants and critters. ( we did not have time to stop there ) The viaduct was built as the NPS did not want to damage the mountain flora and thought over was better than through. Not only did it do what they wanted but there is an iconic view of this from slightly above taken in fall that is the postcard view of this. We took this from a lower vantage point and found out tonight that there is a short but rocky trail you can take from the visitor center at Linn Cove to get that view. I may be too old to try that next time we get down this way. But : here is my best shot of it and a week or so shy of peak fall colors. The extras are form the road just before the viaduct and the view out onto the Blue Ridge Mountains from the viaduct. Yeah , they really do look blue in the distance. 
I was able to connect to the wifi tonight. We are staying at a lovely B and B  in the hills outside of Asheville which unfortunately is on a dirt road and the remains of Ian are supposed to hit this area tomorrow. As we are staying till Saturday here I am hoping the worst of the rain will be over by the time we are supposed to head to the coast. And that there won't be any flooding in the Outer Banks where we are headed. The western side of Florida got slammed with winds and storm surges and the destruction on the news looks bad. It  is supposed to come back to land in South Carolina but predicting where it will go is still little up in the air.
