Backblipping …
The breakfast had dwindled further this morning, but at least they’d been forced to go and buy some fresh bread. Being wimps, Bundle and I decided to have a day off today, while S and L walked down to Caimari and got a bus back.
We decided to finish off the visit to the botanic garden by going to the arboretum. But it turned out to be much smaller and less interesting, apart from the artworks. And only took us 10 minutes. So we were forced to go and have a coffee on the square in the sunshine.
When S and L got back, after a lovely walk, we had a light lunch at the other restaurant that wasn’t short of food. Then S and I visited the sanctuary museum, which is extraordinary. It starts with a room crammed with archaeological finds, some from local sites, from prehistory to Roman times. Then there were some religious relics, including some nativity scenes and delightful brightly colored saints in a naive style. Plus some random decorated fans.
Then a room crammed with ceramics. And another. And another. Then miles of rooms with what must have been the entire life’s work of a local painter. Then, a whole floor of textiles, and another floor of art from the 19th to the 21st century. After nearly two hours, the guy chucked us out because he was closing. It was most impressive.
This evening, Bundle’s friend C, who has lived in Mallorca for 18 years, invited us for dinner. He kindly drove all the way up to the monastery to fetch us, a 40-minute drive, and we had a delicious meal with him and his wife K. We’d asked him to book us a taxi back, but as we finished dinner he revealed that all the local taxi firms had refused to go there so late, so K cheerfully drove us back in the pitch darkness. A lovely evening in good company.
