Secondborn was given a pot of four rose lilies when she left her last job. She was so afraid of being in charge of them that she put them in my care, first in my cold house, then to be moved to my attic. Two stems died. A third stem died. While I was waiting for the fourth to relieve me of responsibility, suddenly, a fortnight ago, a vibrant new shoot appeared in the pot.
