Buttermere and Fletwith Pike

One reason for staying in the Keswick area was to have access to the northern and western fells. Today saw us travel along by roads through the stunning Newlands valley to Buttermere.

Blippers regularly post shots of Buttermere describing walks around the lake so we thought it was about time we did the walk ourselves. We weren’t disappointed. A fine coffee and scone at the Croft House farm cafe set us up for a gentle circumnavigation of Buttermere along with a good number of other likeminded people.

A strong, gusty wind, bursts of sunshine accompanied us for most of the walk, with spits of a rain shower chasing us back to the car.

I was planning a further gentle stroll up Rannerdale Knotts in the afternoon to bag another Wainwright. Susan leaving her coat back at the house preventing this so we drove back to collect it then driving on to Binsey on the northern edge of the National park.

A diminutive hill with 360 degree views from its modest summit was our reward, north to the Solway Firth and Dunfries and Galloway, east to the Eden Valley, south to the Northern Fells, Bassenthwaite and beyond and west to the sea as seen in the two extras.

A fine evening was had with Adam and Jane this evening. We’re out with then on Wednesday to Wasdale which we’re very much looking forward to.
