Trollstigen - The Troll Road
It has been one of the days when we’ve had so many experiences it’s really hard to choose a picture. I think travelling through Norway is often like this.
After we woke up in our slightly strange overnight spot, between the railway and the road, we had a coffee and set off. Soon the valley narrowed and grew more spectacular. Waterfalls, autumn colours, and new snow on the tops. Over the pass and then down to Åndalsnes, past the Troll Wall, pausing to view waterfalls and gorges.
Our original plan was to stop near Åndalnes but after a pleasant couple of hours there we decided to drive up to the top of Trollstigen. We couldn’t get this close and not drive up this classic road, even if it wasn’t on our main route. I’m so glad we did because it really is spectacular. The drive, the views from the top, the road beyond up to the top of that pass, all of them are so wonderful.
Of course, nice weather helped, as did being here later in the year and towards the end of the day. I reckon it may be different in the high season when the coaches, cars, campers and motorcycles are all jockeying for position on those steep hairpin bends!
