Gedney Drove End saltmarsh
Gedney Drove End is an isolated settlement that borders The Wash, one of the largest areas of wilderness in lowland Britain. The sheer size and inaccessibility of The Wash mean that many parts of it are poorly recorded, so today I took a small group of botanists to explore two under-worked monads.
The vegetation of saltmarsh isn't species-rich but many species were new to a couple of the participants. We spent some time looking at glassworts, and recorded a good population of one which had last been recorded in 1953! I took samples home and was able to confirm the presence of five species in our survey area, all of which had been recorded historically.
In the evening Pete, Alex and I went over to Ben and Sarah's garden opening. Just over a year after they moved in they've finally finished the infrastructure and initial planting, though undoubtedly more plants will be added over time. It was good to meet some of her family and to relax in the sun with delicious pulled pork, salad and wine.
