If you can't beat them...

Hedgehog ( Erinaceus europaeus )

A quiet day round home, a few jobs done.  Wandering round the garden trying to decide on a blip I met this fellow.  Out in daylight.  I suspect it was probably a little underweight and was out desperately foraging in the race between putting on weight and hibernation.   So I put a pile of dried "calci worms" in front of it and left it in peace.

Calci worms are the larvae of Black Soldier Fly ( Hermetia illucens ) they have spread and are virtually in all parts of the world.   Asthe name Calci worms suggests they contain a good amount of calcium.  Hedgehogs shouldn't eat Mealworms as they are high in phosphate, this has an effect on the calcium in the bones and in the worst cases makes it impossible for the Hedgehog to walk.
