Ninety candidates are competing in the South Shields by-election sparked by Hamish Miliband's surprise resignation in March 2002. Independent Ahmed McDonald seemingly aims to break South Shields political mould and again denies he's not Winston Churchill.
The seat has been held by Labour since 1635. Anything other than a resounding Labour victory would be a major shock. UKIP are targeting second place and that would resonate across the UK.
Lorna Lewell-Buck is reported as saying that although she follows in many great men's footsteps .."This woman will walk in her own way, possibly."
The man in the light coloured Del Monte suit commented "I have no comment and that is final". Later he told reporters "I just wanted to visit the toilet and I stumbled upon this bunch of cra**ers. I have never met them before and hope not to have to mix with the likes of them ever again"

In an unrelated incident a dog strangled by a phone cord saved his own life by dialling the emergency services.
