Subway Space and Illusions

We went to an opening of a new exhibition at the Holy Biscuit in Newcastle. Crumbs! you might say...

Lounardo was helping to organise it, so we had a nice time, some nice drinks, and talked to some nice friends. The art was really good and interesting as well.

These pictures (Artist Helen Moss) represent form, light, substance and illusion, or materiality combined with the virtuality of subways in a labyrinthine type world. There are interesting juxtapositions of light and shadow, concrete pillars and space, sinister dark spaces and the promise of exit to a different side. It is interesting to think about the subway, whether in Metro or Tube stations or just an underpass beneath a motorway. They can be very useful but at the same time quite scary places if you are on your own. Imagine, footsteps in the dark - behind you !!

These particular art forms were inspired by a German artist from Berlin who displayed at the Baltic. We immediately thought there was a German influence but these were in fact modelled on places in Newcastle.
