CRAM-A-CRUISER

The policemen was set up outside the grocery store. He told me that he was collecting food for the food bank and if I could donate a can or two, that would be great. I asked him how long he was going to be there, and he said, "Six hours."  I said it wouldn't take me that long to shop and be back with a donation. When I came out with my groceries and a donation, he said that he was amazed how much people had given in a short time. The back of his vehicle was getting full! In a similar collection that he did in the lower mainland before coming to the island, he said that he was in front of a Superstore for many hours and didn't collect as much as he had in the short time he'd been parked here. We agreed that the generosity says a lot about a community. Those who didn't contribute groceries were donating cash. A great idea. We give regularly to our food bank. I'll never get over the need for food banks in "wealthy" countries, but with the cost of everything these days, I won't be surprised if the need for them increases. I said to the cashier that I don't know how families can afford to eat healthy food. It's so expensive just for the two of us!
Anyway...I took the groceries to the car and thought, "I should ask if I could take a photo of him."  Got the camera and asked, and he was more than willing!  I explained that I would be posting it and he was interested in Blip and asked for the website and how he could find me on it. I told him, but said that I might or might not post his photo, depending on how it turned out. Challenging light and shadow, cars and people coming and going, and I didn't want to interrupt what he was doing. I think the photo turned out okay, and I did want to document the event. I thanked him for doing this and for all the other work he does.
