Chris and a Camera

A Dreaded Sunny Day....

...so let's go where we're happy and I'll meet you at the cemetery gates.

Luckily I was working near Compton in Surrey this afternoon, so stopped off on my way home at the Watts Chapel. It was designed by Mary Watts, whose artist husband George is remembered at a gallery almost next door; and was built almost entirely by local villagers, whom Mary skilled up to provide the craftwork.

The chapel contains a kaleidoscope of styles including Romanesque, Art Nouveau and Celtic, and the exterior is covered in these terracotta bas-reliefs. I was particularly drawn to these two angels, leaning in towards each other as if they wished to be closer together underneath a Celtic heart.
