Painted rocks
The breakwall at Port Macquarie was built over forty years and finished in 1939. It provides a safe boat entrance to the mouth of the Hastings River.
There is a tradition, originating in an art competition in 1995, of painting the rocks. There are all kinds of art works, memorials, wise sayings and colourful graffiti. Some record annual family holidays over many years.
Our cabin was right beside the breakwall and there was a steady parade of walkers, though we didn’t see anyone actually painting a rock.
