Life in a Northern Town

Plymouth

I’m back in Plymouth. My mum is on a plateau - she doesn’t seem to have the will to get up, to eat or to drink, all things she needs to do in order to go home. She improves slightly when I am there but goes backwards when I leave - it’s a dilemma.

Yesterday I went to funeral of my best friend from school’s father. He was a former
Lord Mayor of the city, hugely involved in City politics and a member of every committee, group and association going, so the funeral was a civic one. The family managed to make it an occasion of love and celebration too, which was wonderful. Less wonderful was my friend taking me to meet a couple of our old teachers who had attended (we thought they were ancient in 1976 but they were probably in their early thirties) - one of them was the PE teacher. She and I did not get along one bit - I have no idea whether she remembered me but I certainly remember her! We were both very polite of course.

Back home tomorrow evening, it won’t be easy to leave.
