Signs of Autumn

There aren't that many signs of autumn here yet, probably because our extraordinarily hot weather threw off the biological clocks of the trees that are left around here. But the flowers know...the Mexican sunflower has proved useful and interesting yet again as the petals fall off the flowers and the centers go to seed.  We will definitely be saving the seeds of this wonderful plant and plant lots of them. They put on a wonderful show. Thanks to MaryElizaR for hosting this month.

I finally made the trek to the one remaining quilting fabric store in Santa Rosa. I think there is still one left in Petaluma but that is an even longer trek. Every time I go into a fabric store I encounter the same thing...a woman who, like me, is wandering, seemingly aimlessly around the store trying to put together a pattern with the right colors. When I make some sympathetic comment, we inevitably get into a conversation about what we are doing, or trying to do. It really is an obsession....

A group of women was gathered around a big table in the back of the store. I gathered from their conversation that they were some kind of organized group as their talk revolved around who had yet to come back (after Covid?) who was suffering from cancer or had had a heart attack, or lost their husband to something. They clearly had been gathering in the back of that store for a long time.

These were all women who were no doubt the same age as me, but I couldn't help thinking, ' they sound like John's grandmother'. Then the talk turned to $15,000 embroidering and long arm quilting machines. The store has a dizzying array of both, in addition to regular sewing machines.

Having amassed a large pile of bolts, I decided I'd better get out of there before any more damage was done. In true, obsessive quilter's fashion I spent the rest of the afternoon cutting 2 1/2 inch squares. Hundreds of them. The idea is that they will now fall into their proper places .

Moises came and washed our windows today. He is such a nice man and does such a good job, it's a joy to have clean windows.

We'll see how long it lasts.
