The parting of the water

Bertie and I spent a second day exploring while N fished and it was interesting to watch all the comings and goings along the canal. We walked  south towards Loch Dochfour to get a view of the weir that separates the River Ness from the beginning of this section of the Caledonian Canal. The weir is on the left side of the main photo and looks a bit like an old Roman road gradually being covered by grass. It’s hard to believe that this is an important structure (two hundred years old!) holding back a huge amount of water the length of Loch Ness. The only channel where it can escape into the River Ness can be seen as a line of white water beyond the furthest of the three chevron markers. The purpose of the chevrons is to direct canal traffic away from the weir and towards Loch Dochfour. The extra shows a tour boat sailing out of the canal towards Loch Dochfour and hence to Loch Ness.
